Most commonly celebrated in spring, International Mother's Day honours mothers, motherhood and the influence of mothers in society. It is observed in various forms on different days in numerous countries around the world. This special day gives people of all ages the opportunity to show their mothers how much they care. Celebrations of mothers and motherhood go back a long way, stretching back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The ancients held festivals in honour of the goddesses Rhea and Cybele, although the closest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

In the first half of the twentieth century, the Mothering Sunday custom morphed into a more secular holiday, offering children the opportunity to offer flowers and other tokens of appreciation to their mothers. Over time, this tradition eventually faded in popularity - eventually converging with the American Mother’s Day during the 1930s and 1940s.

While the UK celebrated Mother's Day earlier in the year, many countries will be observing the holiday over the next two months, including Australia, which celebrates it on 11 May and Poland on 26 May.
