Mobile data traffic to double each year for next 6 years

Ericsson has said it expects mobile data traffic to increase two-fold every year until 2018. The Swedish telecoms industry giant has noted that the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablets has led to a rise in video and music streaming, with voice calls and text messaging forming the smaller part of mobile data traffic.

Research carried out by the company reveals that mobile data traffic doubled between 2011 and 2012.

In its twice-yearly report, Ericsson said there will be approximately 6.6 billion mobile subscriptions worldwide by the end of this year.

By 2018, smartphone and PC subscriptions are set to double to around 4 billion. Smartphone subscriptions are expected to rise from 1.1 billion at the end of this year to 3.3 billion.

Ericsson estimates more than 40 percent of mobile traffic worldwide passes through its networks.
